Interest in research and development is not confined solely to private industry in this field; seven major universities offer courses that deal with wood finishes and finishing. The professional societies and trade associations have also been helpful in product development and in the training of technicians. Exterior emulsion paints for wood are the newest offerings, by the producers. Plywood coatings are rapidly being improved for both interior and exterior use. Foreign developments in this field were concentrated on the use of polyesters which have largely displaced the nitrocellulose finishes. Curtain coaters have become more widely used in the application of both polyester and conventional coatings. New interior finishes include pigment toners, emulsion coaters, and catalyzed lacquers. Airless spraying appears promising as does infrared drying. Bleaching procedures have been simplified. and speeded up. Polyester coatings are very promising, especially the non-wax type.
