The domestic hardwood plywood market is troubled by imports. Softwood plywoods are booming ahead. These statements effectively summarize current conditions. Competition from foreign sources, especially Japan, has forced some hardwood plywood producers out of business in the United States. Progressive plants meet the competition by more automation, prefinishing, and new products such as tram and flooring blocks. Softwood plywood continues to boom ahead. Improved equipment and techniques are holding down cost. FHA requirements were recently revised and now permit the use of other western softwoods in slightly greater thicknesses.
