The Future of Softwood Lumber in Eastern Canada

Demand for softwood will increase but will be modified by inroads of competitive materials. The timber supply is adequate for demand to 1980. It will be very difficult to maintain the competitive position of lumber due to the preponderance of very small, inefficient sawmills in the area. A large amount of engineering research is needed to modernize the industry from forest operations through manufacturing. Marketing is the area most in need of improvement. Vastly improved advertising, assurance of availability of products, proper grading and standards, direct mill to consumer sales, and public relations are all areas that need action and enlargement.
