Staining with osmium tetroxide provides a fast method of detecting brown-rot fungi. It reacted in less than 5 minutes on all brown-rots tested and within 20 minutes for many white-rot fungi. It performed equally well at stages of decay from incipient to advanced. It did not react well on heartwood of a few exceptional species. The technique can be used for early detection of brown-rot and in surveys where type of rot must be determined.
