After much experimentation, a simplified retort was developed. Initial firing is with LP, gas, and gases from the burning wood are utilized to accomplish coaling. The retort is a cylinder 10 feet in diameter, 16 feet high on legs with air-tight doors top and bottom equipped with five special 8 inch flues open at both ends and spaced equidistant through the tank with ends protruding 10-12 inches top and bottom. It was determined that production of 20 tons per day including loading, firing, unloading and grading can be accomplished with eight retorts and two 3-man shifts.
