A case for more basic research as a foundation for applied research is presented. What must be done in the next 10 years to provide the foundation in basic research necessary to a better understanding of wood? First, basic research in the wood sciences must be supported not as an investment in the solution of a specific practical problem but as an expression of faith to ultimately provide the raw material required for the solution of many practical problems. Second, a large number of intellectually talented people must be persuaded to prepare themselves for research in wood science and technology. Third, these students must be provided with training that will prepare them to use the tools of science to explore the unknown with respect to wood and its uses.
