Over one-half the 1962 budget of the National Lumber Manufacturers Assoc. (2,000,000 dollars) is for technical promotion and investigations, the latter are carried out on: evaluation of floor systems, tests on railroad bridge stringers, developing a simplified system of grade names for softwood lumber, a study of new assembly methods, load distribution in multiple member assemblies, improvements in fasteners, FHA valuation for frame houses, graduate fellowships in timber engineering, basic studies on burning of wood and on strength, fire resistance ratings, exterior finishes, and fire loss in metal buildings. The aim is to satisfy the consumer in order to continue a profitable business. The lumber industry is now putting up a common front against competition from other materials. There must be unified effort in light construction, furniture, wood-using industries, and by-products, so that wood will maintain its position in the American home.
