Solvent Drying of California Redwoods

This article reports about 40 tests using acetone in solvent drying of nominal redwood lumber. Variables affecting efficiency were identified as water content of wood and acetone, temperature, and ratio of acetone to wood. Time to dry from green condition (128 to 223 percent moisture content) to 10 percent moisture content ranged from 120 to 235 hours. Water removed was replaced by acetone so that final processing was solvent recovery using circulated air an steam. Authors recommend future study of process economic other solvents, and effect on wood properties.
