Potlatch Forests, Inc., Lewiston, Idaho, mill has installed the world’s first computer control system on a paper machine. It is known as a 1710 Process Control System, and consists of a 1711 analog to digital converter and a 1620 computer. The equipment is first used to gather data, then analysis of these data is made using a multiple regression program in the computer. With this equipment, time required to make grade changes will be sharply reduced, quality will be improved and made more uniform and the ultimate will be to provide closed loop control of the entire mill.
