The effects of prestressing a wood beam fabricated from low-grade wood were investigated by comparative evaluation of the flexural properties of prestressed and matched unprestressed beams that were statistically loaded to failure. The beams were prestressed by placing highly stressed, high-strength steel strands in regions where service loads will produce tensile stresses. Results indicate that increased reliability and greater utilization of the flexural strength properties can be realized by prestressing beams made of low-grade wood.
