Wafer Dimension Control: Number One Design Criterion for Plant Producing Particleboard for Building Construction Uses

The production of particleboards specifically designed for critical housing applications requires that the process employed be capable of producing a variety of products in a range of thicknesses which could successfully compete in performance, quality, and cost with other established products. This paper presents a brief history of a production process and, against the background of the over-all design criteria of the process, discusses the importance of particle geometry and the need for accurate wafer dimension control. Data are presented to show how wafer dimension control was accomplished, how board properties are affected by wafer dimension, and compares recent production quality control test data with the governing performance specifications for two major end-uses for particleboards in housing construction.
