Status of Structural Design for Light Frame Structures

This paper reviews recent engineering advances in the field of light frame construction and the extent to which these changes are accepted by officials in the housing field. Changes in roof trusses, non-load-bearing interior walls, prefabricated units, and structural windows are a few of the new design elements mentioned. Specification and performance building codes are examined in terms of the limitations they place on new materials and techniques. Future work must allay fears about performance and design of innovative elements.
