A definite difference was shown in this study of crown formed and stem-formed wood in specific gravity and fiber length as found in Pinus resinosa from Grand Rapids, Minnesota. These conclusions were reached: 1) stem-formed wood has significantly longer fibers and significantly higher specific gravity than crown-formed wood, 2) correlations of specific gravity and tracheid length with age, height, percent summerwood, and ring width differ between crown- and stem-formed wood, 3) crown- and stem-formed wood are shown to represent different populations. It is believed the auxin supply, which is greatest around the base of the crown, has a major effect on the growing rates of springwood tracheids. The bivariant distribution of specific gravity and fiber length were plotted on correlation ellipses.
