An approximate solution is derived for the deflections bending stresses, and increase in load on beams and decking due to ponding of water or other fluids on roofs or floors. Cases considered are simply supported and clamped beams with uniformly distributed and concentrated loads, plus load due to ponding. Included are results of three model tests verifying predicted deflection and stress increases due to water ponding. A graphical illustration of effects of ponding to increase deflection and bending stresses is given.
