Statistical approaches to complex materials testing and variation research are facilitated by computer application. In this study the least-square straight line model gave an indication of what changes in the drying rate may be expected within the range of variation of anatomical features. Among these characteristics, the extractive content was the most influential. The extractives were actually thought to block the moisture movement through the cell walls. The influence of the grain direction on the drying rate was probably. connected with moisture movement through the ray tissue in a radial direction. Wood with a high ring count also dried more slowly than coarse grained pieces. Lumber segregation on the basis of green weight and ring count appears to have certain merit.
