Utilization of tanoak and other possible California hardwoods is discussed as product development. The product is a heavy-duty industrial flooring. The aspects investigated were: timber volume and availability; methods of logging; sawing and drying methods; technological specification of the product; marketing methods; economic appraisal; design of a manufacturing plant; production levels; potential improvement of product and process to maintain competitive position. The success showed that product development, when undertaken with imagination and sound business sense and critique, can be rewarding.
