The value of statistical methods in establishing and maintaining desired seasoning standards in woodworking plants has been demonstrated by the Forest Products Laboratory in tests at two furniture plants. Standards of seasoning quality –that is, uniformly low moisture content–were arrived at and adhered to in regular production at both plants by establishing a desired average moisture content of 5.5 or 5.6 percent and an acceptable standard of deviation, called the uniformity factor of 0.75. The statistical data needed to establish and maintain the desired average and uniformity were obtained at one plant by sampling lumber as it arrived from the kilns in the fabricating, shop and determining the moisture content of the samples by the oven-drying method; at the other plant, the samples were tested with electric moisture meters. Stock of unacceptable seasoning quality, as indicated by these standards, indicated a need to remedy some step in the drying process.
