Utilization of Low-Grade Hardwoods and Softwoods in the Pacific Northwest

Because of the large virgin stands of high quality timber that existed in the Pacific Northwest, most of the interest in utilizing low value timbers has arisen in the past 15 years. Recent developments in logging, transportation, and manufacturing methods, and the enactment of state forest laws have encouraged more intensive utilization of the forests. Greater interest in yield efficiencies and by-products in the manufacturing plants have also resulted in increased utilization. Even more intensive utilization is foreseen for both major and minor species as a result of research made possible by legislative action in Oregon and Washington, and much sounder forest management policy is expected to result.
