How Insulating Board Products Are Made By the Simpson Logging Co

A description of the manufacture of insulating board at the Simpson Logging Company Woodfiber Plant in Shelton, Washington was described. The plant was located adjacent to two company sawmills and utilized Douglas-fir slabs, edgings, and mill ends from these mills and veneer rejects from another company mill as their source of chips. After removal of rotten wood and bark, chips are stored in bins until used. The chips are reduced to pulp by the action of live steam or hot water and mechanical defibration. Pulp is stored in chests of wood or glazed tile. Trim from the Fourdrinier machine, broken sheets, sawdust, and shredded-up trim and waste from the finishing room are blended into the slurry at the blending box. A fungicide and termiticide, rosin size, and alum are added to the white water system before sheet formation. The slurry is put through the Fourdrinier machine and depending on the final use may be coated at the wet end with a water-dispersed paint. After drying in a Coe dryer, the stock is finished into several products: decorative tile and plank, acoustical tile, roof insulation board, insulating plaster lath, asphalt-impregnated sheathing, and refrigerator insulation. Inspections and control checks are performed throughout the operation so that the end product conforms to Federal specifications. The product is carefully packaged and identified before shipping.
