This article compares an early mill layout with a modern millwork plant. Suggestions are made to replace a roll-feed sander with an endless-belt sander; a resaw with a combination resaw-ripsaw; a planer and matcher with a feed speed of 30 feet per minute with a planer and matcher with a feed speed of 150 feet per minute. A description is given of a modern planing mill installed at Rochester, New Hampshire, in 1951, which produced 120,000 feet in two 8-hour shifts per day.
