Machines used for preparing wood for finishing can be divided into two general groups, one of which includes machines designed to sand different types of parts by simple changes in setup or adjustment of the machine. This groups includes planers, drum sanders, and belt sanders. The other group consists of machines designed to do a particular job, such as automatic turning sanders, handle sanders, and chair back sanders. One of the major operational improvements in recent years has been an increase in the speed of sanding machines. Simplification of design will result in greater production of more and better parts with less labor. Furniture designs should run for at least 5 or 6 years so that maximum efficiency can be had from production machinery.
