Bacteria are commonly associated with heartwood of aspen, balsam, and cottonwood. The specific gravity of the heartwood has been reduced, and it appears highly probable that this has resulted from the action of the bacteria so abundantly present. It appears that bacteria are present in the species Populus investigated and active in the heartwood, probably causing the common discoloration and the reduction in compression and toughness strength and specific gravity which accompany the discoloration.
