A survey of conventional glueline test techniques showed that all of the methods are subject to stress concentrations initiated during testing, and failure in a test specimen may be by stresses other than those nominally considered under evaluation. A photoelastic technique, used to analyze stress patterns in test specimens, showed that the French and German plywood shear specimens offered no apparent advantage over the English and American types of plywood shear specimen.
