The author’s five outstanding impressions of the U.S. timber industry are: 1) The adaptability of the industry, the appreciation of changing circumstances, and the willingness to take a calculated risk. 2) The appreciation by the industry of the part that modern scientific development can play not just in creating new materials which compete with wood, but in opening new fields of utilization of forest products. 3) The growing understanding of material costs and the search for new means of utilizing waste, such as chipcore, wood flour, etc. 4) The great field of the “do it yourself” market and the change that this has brought about in the consumer relationship. 5) The willingness of all concerned in the timber industry to share information and better the general knowledge of techniques for the advancement of the industry as a whole.
