A Changing Hardwood Market: the Furniture Industry

In 1960, about 2.9 billion board feet of wood was consumed in furniture. Hardwoods accounted for 82 percent of all the lumber used. Changing styles and designs account for most of the lumber market loss in recent years. Particleboard is replacing more lumber in the manufacture of furniture and fixtures than any other competitive material. Hardboard is also being accepted as a substitute for lumber. The future trend for furniture hardwood depends primarily upon general economic conditions.
