The intent of this work was to establish a procedure for collecting and analyzing profile data from the scanning densitometer, and to compare the procedure and results for the densitometer to the conventional gravimetric method. Density profiles for four types of wood composite panel products were studied using a conventional gravimetric technique and a direct scanning gamma densitometer. Presented is a description of the densitometry system and the results of the two techniques. The gravimetric method is time consuming, destructive, and prone to error in measurements. The gamma densitometer is fast and nondestructive, with increased precision and accuracy. The gamma densitometer may become the standard technique for laboratory density profile analysis.
