A search was undertaken for a gap-filling adhesive for gluing rough lumber and planer skip lumber into laminated beams and other laminated products. The commercial adhesives examined were either low, in thixotropy so that they did not fill gaps, had poor durability, shrunk or crazed during cure, or were too costly. A series of proprietary phenol-resorcinol laminating adhesives were modified to meet the requirements for a gap-filling product. The adhesive selected, WCO 87B, was thoroughly tested in the laboratory on planer skip lumber for gaps up to l/16 inch thick. All the requirements of ASTM 2559-72 were met. Production was started on large, 125 ft by 3 ft by 5 ft, transmission poles formed by gluing two or more beams together, and field performance of the product was excellent. A temporary variance in the commercial laminating standards has been obtained to make beams from planer skip lumber and lumber with gaps up to l/16 inch, and testing and evaluation is currently under way for this type of product.
