A lightweight, hand instrument is described that can be used in the woods or mill to preselect material of high fiber strength so that such timbers can be earmarked for high-strength products, such as structural members. Almost as easy to use as a pair of pliers, the instrument applies load to common increment cores, and compression is read directly from a dial gauge. This simple test will help determine fiber strength in the log before investment is made in expensive manufacturing processes. In forest genetics, the test should be useful in spotting superior trees and in studying strength properties of trees sampled in wood-quality surveys.
