This review of literature on engineering design for wood products lists 215 publications. Commentary briefly abstracts and relates the literature under headings of Working Stresses, Fastenings, Consideration of the Environment, Glued Laminated Construction, Plywood, Structural Sandwich and Wood in Combination with Other Materials, Timber Roofs, and Pole Structures. Asserting that between 80 and 90 percent of wood is used in light-frame construction it is recommended that the application of engineering research on wood to this field of use be intensified. Particular attention is drawn to the opportunities to improve performance and reduce the amount of wood used, through design systems that involve components in the structural function to the greatest possible extent, avoiding redundant elements. Adhesives contribute significantly to this objective.
