A Man of the Woods

In the stables of my Cornish farmhouse rests my collection of samples of 7,100 timbers of the world. It appears to be the largest privately owned collection of its kind. And this year it is 55 years old. This is the story of how it all came about. It is partly a travelogue of wood-hunting adventures allover the world, partly a tale about friendships which have lasted for years, made by corresponding worldwide, often in the most hostile of political climates, and partly about encouraging, cajoling, and
beseeching total strangers to head up mountains or into the outback to collect wood for me. Mostly it is the story of my passion for wood which has its roots buried deep in my family tree and continues to flourish now.
