A method has been developed to estimate the amount of juvenile wood in the sawn board. A BASIC program based on this method has been developed that employs two user inputs to estimate this juvenile wood content: 1) the orientation of the annual rings in the board’s cross section at the end of the board; and 2) the user’s rule-of-thumb estimate of juvenile wood growth in the log stock from which the board was cut. The method provides a nondestructive, inexpensive, and quick means for estimating the juvenile wood content for boards in the mill or in the marketplace.
