By cutting a cross-sectional sample from a green 8/4 oak board and sealing it between plate glass, the method described permits observation of the changes that occur inside a board during drying. The opening and closing of surface checks and the formation of honeycomb can be continuously studied. Recording and measuring the changes by time-lapse photography is presently under investigation to better understand the formation of drying defects.
