A method of amplifying, recording, and numerically rating the profile of a wood surface is discussed. The method consists of converting changes in surface topography to changes in strain by passing the surface beneath the end of a beam fitted with a probe. Strain gages are mounted on the beam. Variations in strain resulting from irregular surface topography are amplified and recorded graphically. The apparatus was found to work satisfactorily on planed lumber and veneered and plain particleboard.
