Florida’s more than 300 furniture companies import 82 percent of their hardwood requirements from other states and foreign countries. An anomaly apparently exists since 132-million cubic feet of native hardwoods are wasted through mortality, land clearing projects and other non-industrial uses. This presentation deals with the use of bolter saws to reduce hardwood wastes and help satisfy Florida’s demand for furniture stock. An analysis of conversion with bolter saws compared to conventional mills for the production of furniture stock and square yields from low grade logs is discussed. Mill layouts and the mechanics of bolter sawing are also illustrated with a short movie.
