A new measure of strand alignment that effectively quantifies the bending stiffness as affected by strand angle distribution was proposed. This simplified measure combines the strand angle frequency distribution and an empirical function to describe the effect of strand angle distribution on bending stiffness of strand-based panel products. The physical implication of the proposed new measure is explicit; it evaluates the strand angle distribution in terms of the fraction of the maximum achievable bending stiffness. Using 16 actually measured as well as assumed strand angle distributions for verification, this new measure was proven accurate. Some advantages of using such a measure were discussed. Dependence of bending stiffness on strand angle was also analyzed, and the common expressions of strand angle distribution were reviewed.
