Few softwood plywood plants are taking advantage of all of the new equipment available to improve the efficiency of charging the lathe, peeling, offbearing, dryer feeding, detecting moisture, jointing, edge gluing, patching, loading and unloading the press, panel trimming, sander feeding, and panel patching. The glue spreading and layup procedure is still wasteful in terms of labor. All of the improvements still involve separate operations, with the absence of continuous conveyors conspicuous. Consideration of the latest developments in gluing and layup, and the economic engineering of unit automation will aid the producer in deciding whether he should install more efficient equipment in his plant. In a hypothetical, one-grade plywood mill, log grade is determined, and peel, defect limitation, clipping, green chain sorting, and drying are all standardized and closely controlled. A detailed plan for an automated gluing and layup operation is described.
