A plug shear test technique has been found adaptable for testing gluelines in plywood lumber assemblies. This technique, as compared with the standard block shear method, simplifies the preparation of test specimens and minimizes damage to structural assemblies. However, it was more difficult to read wood failure on the round plugs. The shear strength values from both the plug shear and the block shear methods were found to differentiate equally well between different glueline qualities. This differentiation was good for layups with parallel orientation between the lumber grain and the grain of the face veneer, but poor when these grain orientations were 90 degrees to each other.
