Past studies indicate an average air-drying degrade loss of $10 per 1,000 board feet and a range of $8 to $11. A procedure is described that can be used to determine in-plant air-drying degrade as the first step for plant improvement. The steps described are: 1) Sample selection, 2) grading and tallying air-dried boards, noting drying defects, 3) calculating loss based on dollar value, and 4) evaluating causes of degrade with allowance for minimum degrade.
