The first plants engaged in commercial laminating in Canada primarily produced light rafters for agricultural use. In 1950, the production of glulam arches, beams, and other structural parts began on a commercial scale. In 1953, a committee of the Canadian Standards Association drew up Specification 0122 entitled “Design and Fabrication of Glued Laminated Structural Timber.” Research was undertaken to obtain better data on knot frequency, working stresses, and the effects of scarf joints. The Canadian Institute of Timber Construction has prepared and administers the Qualification Code for Application to Manufacturers of Structural Glued-Laminated Timber. All plants are required to manufacture in accordance to the applicable standards.
