A Proposed Modern System to Automate Your Lumber Handling

Comparatively few characteristics of lumber require human judgment for sorting. Lumber must be graded by species and appearance, but all other characteristics are based on physical dimensions that can be determined be measuring devices. In this modern concept of sorting, the grader will have a grading area at the head of the chain. He will sit over the chain while the pieces pass under him. As a piece goes by, he presses a button; when it reaches the correct bin it automatically falls in. The lumber is then sorted by means of a tape system which measures length, width, and thickness. When the sorting pocket is full, the lumber is automatically discharged onto a chain under the sorter which carries it away to the kiln-car stacker.
