A laboratory study was made of the abrasiveness of three-layered southern pine particleboard. Using the same wood source and conditions, boards were made with a range of resin solids from 5.0 to 11.0 percent. Abrasiveness values at different densities were corrected to a common density of 48 lbs./ cu.ft. using the determined abrasiveness-density relationship. A number of shavings sources made into boards at fixed density and resin content exhibited a wide variation in abrasiveness which was found to be related to the silica (grit) content. This fact explains wide variations in tool dulling of commercial particleboard made under close control of density and resin content from a number of wood sources.
