The Princes Risborough stress-grading machine measures the deflection of structural lumber under a fixed load applied to the face. It thus affords a measure of stiffness as a criterion of bending strength. There is no significant advantage in testing the material on both flat faces over loading on a single face, and the evaluation of density does not add to the reliability of the correlation.
