Lumber production remained high during 1953 and although some lumber prices fell, causing small mills to close, western pine mills prospered. New methods and equipment gaining favor were automatic or remotely controlled decks, settings, and dogging, as well as debarking and better yard mechanization. Some small band mills were built to operate in western second-growth timber; a few new mills also were built in the East. Northeastern mills sold about 65 percent of their sawdust and shavings; mills in the southeast, western, and lake states are interested in chipping residues for pulp. Some research was done on lumber grades, machine analysis, and small band saws. A calendar of conferences and a bibliography of sawmill literature are included.
