Early in 1996 the USDA Forest Service’s Princeton Lab, in conjunction with the Wood Component Manufacturers Association (WCMA), conducted a study to investigate rough mill yield practices and performance. The purpose of this study was to identify current rough mill practices and determine how various operational factors impact yield. One hundred and twenty WCMA members were surveyed through a mailed questionnaire. We obtained usable responses from 38 member companies. The members provided detailed information on their mill’s yield performance, lumber supply and part characteristics, rough mill processing equipment, and rough mill processing procedures. They also noted trends and issues affecting yield performance in the wood component industry. These results will be used by mill managers when making critical decisions related to product costing, technology adoption, and rough mill processing strategies.
