A brief discussion of adhesion in general is followed by sections dealing more specifically with recent research related to particleboard. Wood factors relevant to adhesion are wettability, surface effects, aging, and species. With the resin component, the amount and type used, atomization and curing are important. Adhesion in particleboard is dependent on the combination and interactions of these three groups of factors–basic adhesion, wood factors, and resin factors. Many researchers have shown that more efficient use is made of resin when producing particleboard in the laboratory than in commercial production. A second important aspect of particleboard research is that of durability. Structural and exterior uses have good potential and would develop faster if long-term effects were known better.
