A semi-automatic veneer-thickness measuring system has been developed using a thickness-measuring transducer and a digital data-acquisition system. It is part of a proposed larger system for the measurement of veneer thickness, roughness, lathe-check depth, and moisture content by semi-automatic means. One veneer-thickness measurement can be taken in 3 seconds with 0.0005-inch accuracy, the basic accuracy of the system when measuring a non-compressible material. The measurement value is automatically typed and also punched into computer-compatible paper tape. The system can be operated by an untrained person and it reduces to a minimum the effects of operator error and fatigue. The system should be useful wherever a great number of measurements must be made for analysis by digital computer.
