A simple leaching test is described to quantitatively estimate the extent of fixation in wood products treated with chromated copper arsenate (CCA) preservative. It is based on the reaction between diphenylcarbazide and unreacted hexavalent chromium leached from borings taken from treated wood during the fixation process. The test requires about 20 minutes to complete and can be set up in a treating plant quality control laboratory for less than $1,000 ($U.S.)
