A digital computer analytical technique has been used to simulate sawing activities. Input data for the simulated processes were derived from a sample of six oak logs sliced into 1-inch disks. The method consists of a primary program and three supplementary sub-programs: one for sawing lumber, one for rotating the log into new positions, and one for cant production. The model can be used for any thickness of lumber and cant and any degree of log rotation desired. The model shows the feasibility of a new approach to solving the vital question of how best to saw a log.
