Skyline logging, now used in some mountainous areas of the West, also offers one means of limiting environmental impact when logging rough terrain of the central, eastern, and other regions of the United States. An experimental running skyline system has been developed which would be compatible with force and productive volume requirements of these areas. Initial tests show that an innovative yarder drum interlock mechanism employed in the system is effective in maintaining running-line tensions without the use of drum brakes during skyline operation. Field research will continue to develop the experimental system into one with full productive capability.
