The quality of kiln-dried pencil slats is affected by the drying schedule used. In order to assess the impact on product quality of alternative schedules, sample data from batches dried under eight different regimes were collected and analyzed. The statistical concept of confidence limit was used to establish a decision rule for identifying systematic quality differences. On the basis of this decision rule, it was found that five out of seven experimental schedules met the desired quality requirements as well as the control schedule. With minor refinements the statistical procedure demonstrated in this study can be used to construct a product quality index for a economic evaluation of alternative drying schedules.
